At least three people were killed in a crash involving at least 30 vehicles early Saturday morning along Interstate 78 in Lebanon County.
The accident was first reported at about 9:45 a.m. along the westbound lanes of the interstate in Bethel Township, according to Lebanon County 911
Dispatchers said the interstate has been shut down in both directions in the area of Fredericksburg and Route 22. It’s likely to be closed for hours.
Initial dispatches from the scene indicated that anywhere from 30 to 50 vehicles, including tractor-trailers, were involved and at least one of vehicles had rolled over.
There were multiple other reports of patients in critical condition being taken to hospitals in Hershey, Reading and other locations.
How the accident started was not immediately known. The exact number of people injured is also unknown.
A snow squall and poor visibility likely played a part in the crash; a witness said whiteout conditions preceded the crash.
Four LifeLion medical helicopters were also called to the scene, but dispatches indicated that only three had landed.
There were also numerous reports of dozens of people with minor injuries huddling in firetrucks, tractor-trailers and vans until buses were brought in to take them to the hospitals.
